My cell phone buzzed. I didn't recognize the phone number, but I picked it up anyway. After a brief pause, a guy started talking. "Say, 'How are you?'" I did.
Over the next minute, he gave me more commands, pausing for my replies. "Say, 'How was karate practice?' Say, 'That's awesome!' Say, 'That's so awesome!' Giggle and say, 'Yeah, I know.' Now say, 'OK, cool. I'm so there!' OK, now say 'Yeah, right away. Bye.'
The disembodied voice told me one more thing before he hung up on me: "This concludes your faux call." The strange guy on the other end of the line was getting me off the hook.
Moderati's Mobile FAKER, a new service exclusive to Sprint PCS phones, serves as a virtual wingman or wingwoman to any bar-hopping adventure. It includes a half dozen or so features and cost $3.99 a month.
The "faux calls" feature comes in handy when you need to get out of an ugly situation (or away from an ugly person). Run to the bathroom or something, do a few quick button presses on the cell and the FAKER service can call you back minutes immediately -- or up to an hour after you tell it to.
I tested the "boyfriend option" above, but several other characters can call you too, including your boss, a neighbor and a baby. A personal favorite was the French woman, since it was a great way to learn how to say "karate" like a sophisticated Parisian.
"Faux numbers" is the godsister to faux calls. In partnership with something called the Rejection Hotline, FAKER gives you a fake phone number to give in response to annoying suitors. The chump calls the number and gets a voice message saying they've been rejected. It's evil, but nicer than giving them, say, a 1-800 number. A faux number is available in Los Angeles, New York and several other major American cities.
The rest of FAKER is pretty light fare, but can be amusing when intoxicated. "Get hip quick" has a handful of conversation starters, while the almost-not-funny "get a life" allows you to download pictures of fake boyfriends and girlfriends to carry around on your cell. It also has fake vacations and fake pets -- the latter of which might actually help you get laid.
If you really need help, turn to the FAKER community (www.mobilefaker.com) to post potential pickup lines, get help with difficult social situations and get recommended hottie-magnet ringtones. The additional features are all good, but the FAKER seems best suited for the guy or gal trying to get rid of potential partners, not the one trying to attract them.
