April 9, 2007 -- For $4 a month, you can buy a glamorous, witty life - or at least show off one in public.
A new mobile phone service provides an exquisite fake lifestyle, complete with snaps of phony gorgeous lovers, sophisticated one-liners to parrot at parties and even fake conversations that let you pretend you're speaking French with your art dealer in Paris.
"So many people make fake phone calls to impress others, I thought I'd make it easier, with better material," said Cindy Lundin Mesaros, a founder of San Francisco-based Mobile Faker.
In the fake French chat, when you answer your mobile phone, a pre-recorded dialogue script prompts you through your lines and how to pronounce them in French.
"It sounds like you're fluent," she said. The service lets women give out a fake phone numbers to pests, but when they call, a gruff male answers.
Even ringtones are updated regularly to the latest tunes "so people think you're really in the know," she said.
"You can become a fascinating, sophisticated person just by slipping away to text message for the answers in your faux life," Mesaros said
