What’s New: Instagram’s Follow Hashtag Feature

Learn all about Instagram’s newest Hashtag feature and how to use it

Towards the end of 2017, Instagram announced a new feature that allows you to follow hashtags, which makes it easier for you to discover new related content on Instagram.

Hashtags help you organize and categorize your photos, videos, and other content on social media. For brands, it’s an essential element to marketing campaigns and content optimization. In fact, posts on Instagram with at least one hashtag have 12.6% more engagement than posts without one.

With this ability to follow hashtags, you can easily find and get notified on public photos relevant to topics you’re interested in. It’s also a good way to identify new people to follow.

How to follow hashtags on Instagram

Following hashtags on Instagram has the same principle as with following a user.
Here’s how you do it:

  • In the Instagram app, tap on the Search icon beside the Home icon, and search for a topic you’re interested in. No need to add the hashtag sign in the search query.
  • On the Top search results page, you will see relevant hashtags, along with related accounts.
  • Click on your chosen hashtag and it will reveal the Hashtag page. Just tap on the Follow button to begin following the hashtag.

An alternative way to follow hashtags on Instagram is to simply tap on a hashtag in a post. This will also reveal the Hashtag page, and you can easily tap on the Follow button.
Once you’ve followed a hashtag, you’ll begin seeing top posts from that hashtag in your Instagram feed.

Other things you need to know about following hashtags on Instagram

On the Hashtag page, you will also see related hashtags that you can follow, as well as the top Instagram posts about the specific topic.

Another way to discover hashtags is to check out the hashtags that other people follow on their profiles. It’s important to note, though, that the hashtags you follow take precedence over your chosen privacy settings. This means that if your account is set to private, the hashtags you follow will only be visible to your followers.
You can also unfollow a hashtag anytime you like by clicking on the Unfollow button where the Follow button was before.

Following hashtags brings a new way for you to discover posts that are related to your interests and things that you care about. For businesses, this new feature opens doors for opportunity to reach a new audience.
